Back-to-school season can sneak up quickly, and with it comes the rush to gather everything from notebooks to new shoes. For families along the Gulf Coast, a little planning can go a long way toward saving time, money and stress. Navigator Credit Union has some smart back-to-school shopping tips.

Start early and make a list

Before heading to the store, take stock of what your child already has. Backpacks, lunchboxes and clothing from last year may still be in good shape. Then, make a detailed list of what’s needed. Shopping with a plan helps you avoid impulse purchases and ensures you don’t forget the essentials.

Take advantage of sales tax holidays

Back-to-school sales tax holidays help families save money on essentials like clothing, school supplies and electronics by waiving state sales tax. These limited-time events are an excellent opportunity to stretch your budget, stock up on needed items and prepare for the school year without paying extra at checkout.

  • Mississippi’s Sales Tax Holiday is July 11–13, 2025, and applies to clothing, footwear, and school supplies priced under $100 per item.
  • Alabama’s Sales Tax Holiday follows on July 18–20, 2025, and includes clothing (up to $100 per item), school supplies (up to $50), books (up to $30), and computers (up to $750).

Many cities and counties may also waive local sales tax, stacking savings.

Shop smart, not fast

Look for deals in weekly ads, use coupons and compare prices online. Consider buying in bulk for supplies that will be used throughout the year. For some supplies, like crayons and glue sticks, opt for the name brand, as teachers find they typically last longer or are more durable.

Set a budget and stick to it

School shopping can add up quickly. Setting a budget for each category helps you stay on track. It’s also a great time to teach older children how to manage money and prioritize spending.
